Today I’m reviewing the King Amlet Lounge at Billund Airport. Though Denmark’s 2nd largest airport, it’s still relatively small serving just under 4 million passengers a year. Because of that I wasn’t expecting much going in to it. And the only reason I was even here was to take a unique flight with Sun Air of Scandinavia (Youtube review here). But I was pleasantly surprised to find out this lounge is actually one of the best I’ve visited in Europe. They don’t have the widest selection of food or facilities, but it is a really comfortable and well kept lounge. So please read my review of the King Amlet Lounge

The Lounge & Billund Airport

Billund is a small town in central Denmark with a population of only 7,000 people. Despite the town’s tiny size, the airport is actually the second busiest in Denmark after Copenhagen. But at about 3.5 million passengers a year it isn’t exactly a bustling hub. It turns out that Billund is actually where Lego was founded though. And to this day Lego still have their Global HQ, factory and the original Legoland here.

The King Amlet Lounge is the only lounge at this small airport. Despite the lack of competition though they spare no expense. I especially like the lifesize King Amlet Lego statue (plus a few smaller versions). And they have a few impressive aircraft model displays. Just small things but I like when a lounge adds a bit of personality and aviation (and Lego in this case) flair.

You can also access the lounge by flying Business Class with the airlines pictured above. That’s basically all of the airlines (that have business class) that operate out of Billund. So if you’re flying Business you’ll be able to enter for free. Lastly you can enter with various lounge memberships. I was able to enter for free with my Priority Pass card. Seating Areas

First of all, this lounge is massive. Even lounges at large airports like London Heathrow aren’t usually this big. And it never got more than about 25% full which made it a really relaxing place to be. If you look at the Galleries Club Lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5 you’ll see what I mean. Though slightly larger than the King Amlet Lounge, the Galleries lounge was basically 100% full which just made it stressful.

They’ve also arranged the lounge in. avery thoughtful way with plenty of plants and waist high wall dividing seperate areas. That makes it very easy to find a secluded spot with lots of privacy.

The seats themselves were all quite comfortable and kept clean. I went for the below armchair by the window and had the area to myself for the duration of the visit. All chairs also have power sockets within easy reach.

The tall ceilings and floor to ceiling windows also just make it a light and pleasant place to be. It also makes for some good plane spotting as almost everywhere in the lounge has views of the runway. Of course there isn’t much happening at the airport given there are only about 10 flights an hour. But it’s better than nothing.

On top of the private phone rooms there’s also two seperate private lounge areas. The first (picture below) is apparently a business lounge. I’m not really sure what about it makes it suitable for business though (the desks maybe?). There’s also just a regular quiet area which has yet more seating, including full recliner chairs and some regular armchairs.

Food & Drink

Starting with the drinks the choice here is quite good. They have a soft drink machine with Pepsi, Sprite, Orange Juice, Sparkling water, chilled water etc. Plus a coffee machine at each end of the lounge which does make decent coffee. And also tea bags if you’re a tea person. Lastly, if you want some booze, there are 3 types of beer on tap and a few bottles of various wines and prosecco. All self serve. I just had coffee and water as it was still the morning. But it is a good selection and you can help yourself to as much as you want.

The below picture is pretty much all of the hote food options. There was some spicy chicken breast, meatballs and some sort of vegan alternative. Not a massive choice, but the chicken was nice at least, if a bit dry. There was also quite a good offering of salad (very German/Scandinavian style). I just went for potato salad and some lettuce, but they did have a few more things like tomatoes, pickled beets, more pickled things I couldn’t identify. And of course they had some ham and cheese too so I made myself a sandwich.

Lastly, there was some fresh bread, dressings and sauces, a few small cakes and some bar snacks (crisps, nuts, etc). Again, a small selection but I was able to make quite a nice meal. Plus it was all relatively good quality.

Everything Else

On the more practical side, there were a few private phone booths, and two seperate lounge areas. One for relaxation and one for business (supposedly). I would have liked to see some showers, but for a lounge like this it’s not necessary. I imagine very few passengers are connecting at Billund Airport people at this lounge wouldn’t need to refresh after a long flight.

Final Thoughts

Overall I was very impressed with the King Amlet Lounge at Billund Airport. The lounge itself was huge and felt light and airy with lots of wood and plants on display. The seating was also arranged in a way that made it very easy to find a secluded spot so it’s great for privacy. Not to mention the two smaller seperate lounge areas (one for business and one for quiet) plus a couple of closed off phone rooms. The food selection wasn’t great, but what was there is nice enough. And small touches like the robot waiter, aircraft models and Lego King Amlet statues are appreaciated. The only downside is the lack of a shower, but given how few people are connecting through Billund I think that’s understandable.
